When Hans left, Sasha opened the bottle of water and drank down half in one long gulp. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d had a drink or something to eat. Then she opened the bag of peanuts and took a mouthful. As she chewed, she thought about Hans’s comment about her being a nice person. He wouldn’t have said that if he knew the things she had turned a blind eye to.

The delivery onboard the ship was a difficult one. The girl’s cervix wouldn’t dilate completely, but her water had broken, and she was crowning. The ship doctor gave her a local anesthetic and helped guide the baby out, but she tore badly. The doctor left Sasha to deal with her bleeding and the afterbirth while he cleaned up the baby and checked him.

When he finished, Alina came into the room and approached the doctor. Sasha was focused on cleaning up the mother but could hear what they were discussing. Alina asked if the baby was healthy and said she had a buyer in America. When the doctor assured her that all would go according to plan, Alina left.

The baby began crying then, and the doctor handed the infant to Sasha. “Have the mother feed him. I’ll take over stitching her up.”

When Sasha put the little boy in his mother’s arms, she helped guide the infant to her breast. The girl gently kissed the top of the baby’s head, joy on her face.

Sasha prayed that she was wrong about the baby’s fate. But two weeks later when the ship docked in America, Alina held the bundled infant as they disembarked. Sasha watched as she brought the baby boy to a waiting couple. As the woman cooed and smiled at him, the man handed Alina a thick envelope. She slid it into her bag, then shook their hands, and they turned and walked away.

Her heart aching for the young mother, Sasha searched the crowd disembarking the ship, but she didn’t see her. When Sasha met Alina’s eyes, they narrowed. “Welcome to America,” she said. “Keep your mouth shut, and one day you’ll be an American citizen.”
